In October three of our Yr10 students were the lucky recipients of a place on the Fantasy Wings 22/23 programme. This year British Airways are sponsoring 300 places across the UK. This programme aims to increase diversity in the aviation and commercial air pilot industries by creating opportunities for young people from underrepresented groups to participate in expert-led workshops, conferences, mentoring and real flight training. At the end of the programme, 50 young people will be selected to have a trial flight and 3 young people will have their 45-hour Private Pilots License training sponsored by Fantasy Wings. The programme started in October and runs for 10 months, one Saturday each month.
Below is an account form one of our students on the programme so far.
“I went to Flight Wings which is an aviation programme. This gives young people the opportunity to fly a plane, apply for a pilots licence or PPL (Private Pilots Licence)
At the end of the programme, if you are in the top 20 you are offered £10,000 towards a flight school scholarship. I learnt about the different career paths and financial strains of becoming a pilot, the different flight schools and what they specialise in.
Next week we will be going on a flight simulator, doing the theory on the PPL and hopefully be awarded a pilots licence.
It has always been my ambition to be a pilot from the moment I stood in a cockpit aged 9 and now it’s all I want to do.”
